The employment situation in Canada has been disappointing, with only 22,000 jobs added in August. A video of a long queue of job seekers, mostly Indian students, outside a restaurant went viral, shedding light on the extent of the crisis. The video shows thousands of students waiting to be interviewed for service staff/waiter positions at a restaurant called Tandoori Flame. Many of these students have been in Canada for three years and have struggled to find suitable employment.
In addition, a techie working for Infosys as an SAP specialist in Toronto, Canada, shared that his salary of CAD 115,000 (about Rs 70 lakh) was not sufficient to survive in the country. This viral video drew attention to the high cost of living and rent in Canada.
This job-queue video comes at a time when Canada is revising its Temporary Foreign Worker Programme (TFW) to prevent misuse and fraud. The program allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers for temporary jobs when suitable or qualified Canadians are not available to fill vacancies.
