Amazon to reduce hundreds of jobs in its Alexa division

Amazon to reduce hundreds of jobs in its Alexa division

Amazon has recently reduced headcount in its music and gaming divisions. Amazon’s Alexa unit is set to lay off employees.

With Amazon’s decision to shift priorities and focus more on generative artificial intelligence (AI), hundreds of employees from its voice-assistant unit may be laid off. The exact number of people who will be laid off is unknown, but reports indicate that employees in the United States, Canada, and India will be affected.

Employees in the music and gaming divisions, as well as the human resources department, were recently let go.

The news does not come as a complete surprise, as there has been evidence that Amazon’s devices and services businesses are not profitable. Alexa, the voice assistant, could be used to set timers, handle search queries, play music, provide jokes and trivia, locate a phone, and even function as a home automation hub. Right now, the company believes it must focus all of its efforts on generative AI because that is what matters most to its customers. After all, technology can generate not only new and creative content, but also images, code, and text from existing data. As a result, by investing in generative AI, Amazon will be able to improve Alexa’s features and make it even more spontaneous, sharp, and supportive.
