Uday Kotak resigns as MD and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank three months early of schedule

Uday Kotak, 64, has resigned as CEO and Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Bank. He was supposed to reach superannuation in December 2023, but he decided to leave three months earlier for personal reasons. It is worth noting that the Reserve Bank of India has set a maximum tenure of 15 years for a managing director or managing director of a private-sector bank.

His banking and financial services career lasted over 40 years. After an injury prevented him from continuing his cricket career, he founded Kotak Mahindra Bank in 1985.

Despite his resignation as CEO and MD, Kotak will remain on the board of Kotak Mahindra Bank as a non-executive director.

In his early twenties, Kotak established a financial consultancy in an office space provided by his father.

Kotak, a graduate of Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies and Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, was hesitant to join his father’s family business. His family’s main business was cotton trading and agricultural commodity sales. He, on the other hand, took a different path and obtained a banking licence in 2003.

He currently owns a 26% stake in Kotak Mahindra Bank, which is worth more than Rs 3.5 lakh crore.
