Wipro fires 300 employees for moonlighting at competing companies.

Wipro fires 300 employees for moonlighting at competing companies.

Wipro has terminated 300 employees after discovering that they were working for rival technology services companies, such as Infosys and Tech Mahindra, at the same time. This action emphasizes Wipro’s strong stance against moonlighting and reinforces the company’s policy of not tolerating dual employment.

Rishad Premji, chairman of Wipro, revealed at an event in New Delhi that the company found 300 individuals employed with Wipro who were also working for one of its competitors on the side. Although he did not provide detailed specifics about the incident, an executive confirmed that the terminations took place earlier this month.

An executive familiar with the matter disclosed that all 300 employees had less than three years of work experience and had joined Wipro in the past two years. The discovery was made during Wipro’s annual internal audit of employees and vendors in July. The audit revealed that these employees were simultaneously working at other IT firms by accessing the Universal Account Number (UAN) from the Employers’ Portal of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation. The UAN is a 12-digit unique number assigned to employees in the organized sector, allowing companies to access details of an employee’s previous and current employment.

In April, Wipro released its quarterly results for the sixth consecutive quarter. According to the financial report for the period spanning January to March 2024, the company experienced a net reduction of 6,180 in employee strength.
