In a significant relief for millions of workers across India, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for Universal Account Number (UAN) activation and Aadhaar linking to 30 June 2025. This extension particularly benefits workers in the unorganised sector and contractual jobs who missed the earlier deadline of 31 May 2025.
The extension allows more employees to access vital benefits under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme, which provides life insurance coverage up to ₹7 lakh to nominees if an employee dies during service. However, this benefit is contingent upon the employee’s UAN being active and linked to Aadhaar.
Activating the UAN is essential to avail multiple EPFO services such as claiming the provident fund (PF), receiving pension benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), and accessing life insurance. It also ensures that personal and employment details are updated accurately in the EPFO database.
Employees who have not yet activated their UAN or linked it with Aadhaar are urged to complete the process promptly, especially if they have been enrolled by their employer but have not yet activated their accounts.
The activation process is entirely online and straightforward. Employees can visit the official EPFO member portal, select ‘Activate UAN’, and enter their UAN, name, date of birth, Aadhaar number, and mobile number. After verifying the OTP sent to their mobile, they can set their login credentials. Post-activation, services such as PF balance checking, KYC updates, and claim status tracking become accessible online.
This deadline extension offers a crucial opportunity for workers to secure their social security benefits without losing out due to missed deadlines.
