Global biopharmaceutical leader AstraZeneca has reinforced its footprint in India by expanding its global hub in Bangalore. The new facility, developed with an investment of ₹166 crore, will generate 400 new jobs and has the capacity to accommodate up to 1,300 employees.
This expansion will bolster AstraZeneca’s capabilities in AI-driven research and development (R&D), global business services, information technology (IT), and digital health operations. It reflects the company’s growing commitment to leveraging India’s scientific and technological strengths to drive healthcare innovation.
Just a year ago, AstraZeneca had also significantly expanded its Global Innovation and Technology Centre (GITC) in Chennai. Together, the Bangalore and Chennai hubs are set to employ approximately 4,000 professionals dedicated to delivering transformative medicines to patients worldwide.
Jackie Crockford, Vice President of Global Business Services at AstraZeneca, noted, “The Bangalore hub will play a vital role in our ambition to deliver 20 new medicines by 2030 by fostering automated, data-driven, and patient-centric solutions.” She also emphasized AstraZeneca’s commitment to decarbonizing operations and leveraging Karnataka’s talent and innovation ecosystem to power the next wave of scientific breakthroughs.
Magnus Nord, Vice President of Global Patient Safety Biopharma, added, “This expansion strengthens our R&D capabilities by tapping into India’s exceptional expertise, accelerating the development of innovative medicines and improving global patient outcomes.”
The new Bangalore facility will support several critical priorities, including advanced clinical research in AstraZeneca’s therapeutic focus areas, AI-powered healthcare innovations, centralized data analytics for better clinical trial performance, and global regulatory and pharmacovigilance operations.
Dinesh Gundu Rao, Karnataka’s Minister of Health & Family Welfare, welcomed the investment, stating, “AstraZeneca’s expansion reaffirms India’s leadership in science and healthcare and aligns with our vision to generate high-value employment and foster innovation in biotechnology and R&D.”
Environmentally, the hub is built with sustainability at its core. It is designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification, runs on 75% green energy, features full wastewater recycling, and includes IoT-based systems for optimized energy use.
