Tata Steel has set an ambitious goal to achieve a 20% diverse workforce across all group operations by 2028, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to workplace inclusion through its MOSAIC initiative.
Launched in 2015, MOSAIC is Tata Steel’s flagship diversity and inclusion (D&I) programme, focused on fostering equity and belonging for employees of all backgrounds—regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ability, or social identity. The initiative is built on five key pillars: recruitment, sensitisation, retention & development, infrastructure, and celebration. These pillars guide the company’s efforts to promote inclusion for women, persons with disabilities (PwDs), LGBTQIA+ individuals, and affirmative action groups.
To drive this vision, Tata Steel has implemented several progressive HR policies. These include equal benefits for LGBTQIA+ partners, gender-neutral parental leave, support for employees undergoing gender transition, and inclusive relocation and travel policies to ease workplace transitions.
Among the notable programmes launched under MOSAIC are:
-
Women of Mettle: A scholarship programme for female engineering students.
-
Transgender inclusion at mines: Hiring transgender operators for heavy earth-moving equipment.
-
Queerious: A case study competition for LGBTQIA+ students.
-
Ananta Quest: A platform launched in 2023 for students with disabilities.
-
First female firefighter trainees: Breaking new ground in traditionally male-dominated roles.
With this 2028 target, Tata Steel aims to transform diversity norms in industrial sectors, focusing on inclusive hiring, supportive infrastructure, and awareness-building programmes. The company’s broader goal is to create a future-ready, diverse workforce that reflects modern workplace values.
