Meta employee’s post criticises India’s tech recruitment culture

Meta begins layoffs, 10,000 employees to go without jobs across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp - HR Talk

A recent post by a Meta employee on the anonymous workplace forum, Blind, has sparked widespread discussions in the tech community. In the post, the employee shared his negative experiences with recruiters from the Indian branches of major companies, including Uber and Atlassian.

The employee, an Indian national working in the US, described India’s tech recruitment practices as “strange” and “unprofessional.” He is exploring relocation opportunities later this year and noted that many recruiters were often disrespectful of agreed-upon availability, calling him outside designated time slots and displaying impatience when he was unable to respond.

According to the employee, these interactions exemplified the unprofessionalism commonly associated with the Indian corporate world. In contrast, he praised companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon for their professional conduct throughout the interview process and expressed hope for consistent experiences as he progresses through future interviews.

The post received a mixed response on Blind. Some users resonated with his concerns, sharing similar experiences regarding inefficiencies and communication gaps in India’s hiring culture. Others, however, questioned his expectations and even advised him to reconsider returning to India. The employee clarified that his decision to relocate is based on personal priorities, particularly his desire to be closer to his aging parents.

Blind requires users to verify their employment through work emails, which adds credibility to the claims made. This incident has once again highlighted the cultural and operational differences in global hiring practices, especially in the tech sectors between India and the West.
