The Punjab government has reported providing government employment to around 61,000 young people across the state over the past four years. At a recent event, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann distributed appointment letters to 606 newly selected candidates who will be joining the state’s Education Department.
According to official details, the latest round of appointments includes 385 special education teachers, 157 primary teachers, eight principals, and 56 individuals appointed on compassionate grounds. The recruits have been selected from different parts of the state.
The Chief Minister stated that all appointments made during the four-year period were carried out through a transparent, merit-based process. The government has consistently highlighted employment generation as a key focus area of its administration.
As part of reforms in the education sector, the state has created a dedicated cadre for special education teachers in government schools. The 385 teachers recruited under this initiative are expected to support the learning needs of approximately 48,000 children with special needs enrolled in primary and secondary government schools across Punjab.
Media reports also indicate that the government has invested in international and domestic training programmes for educators and school administrators. Around 234 principals and education officers have reportedly undergone training in Singapore, while 249 head teachers attended programmes at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad. In addition, 216 primary teachers received training at Turku University in Finland. These initiatives are aimed at improving the overall quality of education in the state.
The government has said that the appointment of new teachers, particularly in special education, is expected to strengthen learning outcomes for students. Punjab has also implemented supporting measures such as free bus services for girl students, with approximately 10,000 students reportedly using the facility daily.
As part of broader school infrastructure reforms, the state has stated that seating arrangements have been provided to ensure that students in government schools have access to proper chairs or benches.
