Amazon has reportedly laid off between 500 and 700 employees across its India operations as part of a broader global restructuring effort. Industry sources indicate that the majority of affected roles are within technology and human resources functions, with software-development engineer positions making up a significant share of the exits.
The layoffs in India form part of a larger plan under which Amazon is reducing over 16,000 roles globally. The restructuring aims to simplify the organisation, reduce management layers, improve accountability, and address internal complexity.
Amazon has not issued a country-specific statement, instead referring to an internal communication covering organisational changes at a global level. Affected employees are expected to receive transition support, including severance packages, career services, and continuation of health benefits in accordance with local regulations. The company has emphasised that hiring will continue in select strategic areas.
This is not the first round of job cuts at Amazon in India. In late 2025, the company had reduced its workforce in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, impacting teams across Prime Video, HR, devices, retail, and cloud services, including several mid- and senior-level employees.
The latest reductions come amid a broader trend in the industry, as companies increasingly automate processes and redirect resources towards artificial intelligence and long-term growth initiatives.
