Infosys is planning to transition between 25% and 33% of its workforce into specialist roles as the IT services major adapts its talent strategy to growing demand for artificial intelligence, advanced technologies and digital transformation, according to a report by The Economic Times.
The proposed shift would significantly change the skills mix across the company. If implemented at the upper end of the range, roughly one in three Infosys employees could eventually work in specialised technology roles.
Infosys to Build Frontier Engineering Talent
Alongside reskilling its existing workforce, Infosys is also expected to build a team of around 6,000 frontier engineers with advanced technical expertise.
According to the report, the company plans to recruit these professionals from leading institutes in India and universities in the United States. The hiring drive could put Infosys in competition with technology companies and research organisations seeking similar AI and advanced-technology talent.
Focus on AI and Advanced Technologies
The workforce strategy was discussed during Infosys’ three-day annual Americas Confluence in Washington, DC, where the company presented its technology and business priorities to partners, advisers and analysts.
The proposed changes reflect the growing role of AI in technology services. As clients adopt AI and other emerging technologies, IT service providers are increasingly seeking employees with deeper expertise in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud technologies, data, cybersecurity and digital transformation.
Reskilling Existing Employees
The planned transition is expected to involve both existing employees and new recruits.
A significant portion of the workforce could undergo reskilling to develop specialised capabilities, while new hiring would help bring expertise into emerging technology areas.
The approach could also change the traditional talent model used by large IT services companies. The industry has historically depended on hiring large numbers of graduates and developing them through relatively standardised career paths.
A greater emphasis on specialist roles could lead to more differentiated career tracks, deeper technical expertise and continuous employee reskilling.
No Indication of Overall Workforce Reduction
The reported plan focuses on changing the composition of Infosys’ workforce, rather than reducing its overall employee base.
The company is looking to increase the proportion of employees working in specialised roles as AI changes both the technology requirements of clients and how IT services are delivered.
The development highlights the broader transformation taking place across the IT services sector, where companies are placing increasing emphasis on AI expertise, advanced engineering capabilities and specialised technology skills.
