The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for employers to file the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and pay statutory contributions for September 2026 to October 31. The original deadline was October 15.
The extension was announced by the EPFO in a post on X on October 14, giving employers additional time to complete payroll adjustments and meet their monthly compliance obligations.
The decision comes after a reported revision in the statutory wage ceiling for mandatory Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, effective September 17, 2026. The mid-month change requires employers to review employee eligibility and update payroll calculations in accordance with the applicable rules.
What employers need to know
The Electronic Challan-cum-Return is a monthly filing through which employers submit employee-wise wage and contribution details for the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI).
To meet the extended deadline, employers should review payroll records, verify employee details and recalculate statutory contributions wherever required. They should also ensure that the figures reported in the ECR match their payroll data before submitting the return.
Both the ECR filing and payment of the applicable statutory contributions for the September 2026 wage month must be completed by October 31, according to the reported extension.
Extension applies to September 2026 contributions
The additional time is intended to help employers accommodate the reported wage-ceiling revision and make the necessary payroll changes. However, the extension does not remove the obligation to file the return or pay the contributions due.
The revised deadline applies specifically to the September 2026 wage month. Employers should continue to follow the prescribed filing and payment schedules for subsequent months.
Employers should verify the revised wage ceiling, its effective date and the applicable contribution requirements against official EPFO notifications and circulars before finalising their payroll calculations.
