Employees working on the project lost their jobs as a result of Apple’s decision to scrap its autonomous electric car project. Some of the special project group’s (SPG) 1,400 personnel were reportedly going to be relocated to Apple’s generative AI initiatives.
Over 600 workers in California lost their employment after Apple halted its projects to develop automobile and wristwatch displays, according to a recent report by Bloomberg. Documents submitted to the California Employment Development Department disclosed this information.
Senior executives were concerned about the electric car project because it had been kept secret and had used a lot of resources over the previous ten years. The project has also experienced changes in leadership and encountered a number of difficulties. Similar problems with price, technical, and supplier concerns plagued the smartwatch display project.
The affected workers, who were mostly hardware engineers and automotive designers, were given three months to find other positions at Apple or risk being let go.
The main automobile project office in Santa Clara, California, laid off about 371 employees, and the impact was also seen in other locations. A few members of the team were moved to other teams, such as those working on robots and artificial intelligence (AI) projects.
