Atlassian, the team collaboration and productivity software company behind Jira, Confluence, and Loom, is significantly expanding its presence in India with a new research and development (R&D) centre in Bengaluru, four times the size of its existing office in the city.
Since 2018, Atlassian’s India workforce has grown from 60 to over 2,500 employees, making it the company’s largest team outside Australia and the US. Nearly 75 per cent of its India employees are in R&D roles, working on strategic areas such as enterprise search, commerce, data residency, and customer success. India has become a cornerstone of Atlassian’s global growth engine.
World-class facilities and collaborative spaces
The new office spans over two lakh square feet across two levels, accommodating more than 1,000 employees. It features 420 ergonomic workstations, 200 agile work points, 70 collaboration studios, and five intentional team gathering (ITG) rooms—double the previous capacity. A 280-seat double-height café with live kitchen and regional cuisine, quiet zones, reflection rooms, parent rooms, yoga/multi-use spaces, recreational terraces, and a multipurpose outdoor sports court supporting cricket, futsal, badminton, and pickleball add to the campus’s employee-first design. Over 10,800 live plants have been installed to enhance biophilic impact.
The R&D centre has been designed to support Atlassian’s Team Anywhere policy, a distributed-first approach empowering employees to work from home, office, or any location. Flexible workstations, collaborative zones, wellness areas, and advanced technology enable hybrid teams to collaborate seamlessly across time zones.
Investing in India’s talent
“India continues to be one of our most important R&D hubs, and Bengaluru sits at the heart of this growth,” said Rajeev Rajan, CTO, Atlassian. “This new world-class R&D Centre is more than just a larger space—it’s a symbol of our investment in the future of work, in distributed teamwork, and most importantly, in the exceptional talent we have here in India.”
Avani Prabhakar, Chief People Officer, added: “The new R&D Centre is a destination for the incredible talent we have in India, designed for how we work today and how we will work tomorrow. Our Team Anywhere approach allows us to attract and retain top talent across the country.”
The Bengaluru expansion is part of Atlassian’s broader global growth strategy, underlining India’s importance in the company’s innovation and product development initiatives.
