A chat between an employee and the CEO of a foreign startup with operations in India has gone viral on social media after the CEO issued what was described as a “special warning” to the employee for working from home without prior approval. The incident first surfaced on Reddit, where the employee shared that they had emailed the CEO to inform him about working from home due to a twisted leg and mobility issues. In a significant judgment protecting employee rights, the Karnataka High Court has ruled in favour of a former customer service assistant, Rao, directing that he be paid ₹13 lakh with interest, even though his employer had subsequently gone insolvent. Rao, who joined the company in 2000 and was confirmed after a six-month probation, was dismissed in August 2008 following allegations of misconduct. The benefit was separate from Google’s hybrid work model, which permits employees to work from home two days per week. The company notified employees…

With this move, Karnataka becomes the first state in India to extend menstrual leave to employees across public and private sectors. The policy follows recommendations from an 18-member committee that submitted a report to the state’s Labour Minister, advocating for paid menstrual leave. Earlier proposals suggested six days of leave annually, which had received mixed responses from employers and support from trade unions. In November 2024, the Labour Department invited…
