Google announces layoffs in its HR and cloud operations as part of continuous cost reductions

Google has begun implementing job cuts within its cloud division and human resources department as part of a larger internal restructuring effort. These layoffs are part of the company’s ongoing initiative to streamline operations and redirect resources towards artificial intelligence and business expansion.

To optimize resources for AI investments and business growth, Google has informed full-time employees in its people operations division in the US about a voluntary exit program set to begin in early March. Reports indicate that mid-to-senior level employees who choose to participate in this buyout could receive severance packages that include 14 weeks of salary plus an additional week for each year of service.

Several teams within Google’s cloud division, including sales operations, customer experience, internal deal support, and go-to-market teams, are also being affected. Some of these positions are being relocated to India and Mexico City as part of a strategic operational shift. The exact number of layoffs in the cloud division has not been disclosed, although Google has asserted that the impact will be limited.

While the total number of job cuts remains unspecified, Google has characterized the layoffs as limited in scope. The company has also reassured employees that it continues to hire for key sales and engineering roles. Affected workers are encouraged to explore alternative positions within the company.

In January, Google announced plans to offer buyouts to employees in its Platforms and Devices unit in anticipation of potential reductions. This division, which encompasses over 25,000 employees, oversees products such as Android, Chrome, Google Photos, Pixel, and Fitbit. These workforce reductions are part of Google’s strategy to streamline its personnel while focusing on areas of strategic growth.
