Google is increasingly hiring former employees to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) teams, with returning professionals accounting for nearly 20 per cent of new hires in key AI roles in 2025, according to industry reports.
The approach reflects a strategic response to intensifying global competition for advanced AI talent. After several rounds of workforce restructuring in recent years, the company has adjusted its hiring strategy to prioritise professionals who are already familiar with its engineering practices, internal systems and organisational culture.
These returning employees are being placed across major generative AI initiatives. Their prior experience at Google allows them to integrate quickly into teams, while skills and perspectives gained during time spent outside the company are contributing to fresh approaches in product development and problem-solving. This combination has helped shorten onboarding timelines and support faster execution of complex AI projects.
Google continues to recruit from a broad range of sources, including rival technology firms, startups and the wider tech ecosystem. The mix of returning talent and external hires is aimed at strengthening its AI capabilities as innovation cycles in the sector continue to accelerate.
The increased focus on so-called “boomerang hires” also reflects a wider trend in the technology industry, where non-linear career paths are becoming more common. For Google, tapping into its alumni network has emerged as a practical way to secure experienced AI professionals and maintain momentum in a rapidly evolving field.
