A former employee, closely involved in the development of Meta’s LLaMA models, has described the unit as dysfunctional—plagued by fear, confusion, and a growing sense of aimlessness.
In a candid farewell note that has gained traction internally, the ex-researcher painted a troubling picture of the AI division, which reportedly employs around 2,000 people. The note describes an environment weighed down by repeated layoff cycles and rigid performance reviews—factors that, according to the employee, have drained morale and stifled innovation.
The criticism highlights a widening gap between Meta’s leadership and its AI teams. While the company continues to aggressively hire top talent from rivals like OpenAI and Apple, much of the focus is said to be on building a “Superintelligence” team—leaving other AI units directionless and without a clear roadmap.
