Panasonic, the Japanese electronics giant, has announced its exit from the Indian refrigerator and washing machine segments. Production of these appliances will be halted at the company’s Jhajjar plant in Haryana, marking a major restructuring effort. While the exact number of affected employees has not been officially revealed, layoffs are expected as part of this transition.
The Jhajjar facility had been a key manufacturing hub, reportedly producing 4.5 lakh air conditioners, three lakh washing machines, and five lakh refrigerators annually. For over five decades, Panasonic has maintained a strong presence in the Indian market through its offerings in televisions, air conditioners, lighting solutions, wiring devices, and electric vehicle components. These products have been manufactured across its various plants located in Haridwar, Sri City, Daman, Pithampur, and Jhajjar, under the Panasonic Life Solutions India and Panasonic Energy India banners.
Moving forward, the company plans to shift focus to high-growth areas such as home automation, energy solutions, ventilation and cooling systems, electrical products, and B2B solutions.
To support its dealer network during this transition, Panasonic will assist in clearing existing inventory of refrigerators and washing machines. The company has also assured continued customer support, including warranty services and the availability of spare parts.
According to The Economic Times, Panasonic may repurpose the Jhajjar plant for contract manufacturing for other brands in the near future.
