Stellantis lays off 2,250 workers at Italian Mirafiori plant

On January 15, 2024, Stellantis, a car manufacturer, announced that it would temporarily lay off about 2,250 employees at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy. The layoffs are expected to be due to a decline in demand and will affect 1,250 workers who work on the electric Fiat 500 and 1,000 workers who manufacture Maserati models. The layoffs will be effective from February 12, 2024, to March 3, 2024.

The unions are concerned about the upcoming job cuts and want to have a discussion with the company soon. In September 2023, the company had announced that it would let go of nearly 2,400 workers at its Mirafiori plant in Italy between October 19 and November 3, 2023, due to slow demand.

Apart from Italy, Stellantis NV announced on January 15, 2024, that it is letting go of 539 temporary workers in its US factories permanently after reviewing operations. The affected workers, who were notified on January 12, 2024, are lower-paid temporary employees from General Motors and Ford Motor. The company said that it often reviews its workforce to ensure smooth operations at its factories and make them more productive and competitive in the market. This move is part of the Dare Forward 2030 plan to improve and grow.

The reduction in the workforce is immediate, and the affected workers won’t receive extra unemployment benefits. The company is making these changes as part of its efforts to shift towards electric vehicles, which are more expensive to produce, after signing a deal with the United Auto Workers.
