The Telangana government has approved the encashment of earned leave for employees of the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), bringing clarity to a long-pending issue related to service benefits. The decision was formalised through a government order issued on Monday, 29 December 2025.
Until now, regular employees of NIMS were not eligible for earned leave encashment, even though their pay scales were aligned with those followed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The exclusion had been a longstanding concern among staff, who sought parity with other state government employees.
Employee associations, including the Hospital Nursing Association, had repeatedly raised the matter, citing both financial and administrative implications. Recent representations prompted departmental-level reviews, followed by consultations within the government.
Based on these deliberations, the state cleared the proposal to allow NIMS employees to surrender accumulated earned leave in exchange for cash benefits. The encashment will be regulated under the Telangana Leave Rules, 1933, which apply to state government personnel. The Health Department issued the formal order extending these provisions to NIMS staff.
The decision places NIMS employees within the same leave framework as other government employees in the state. Officials said the move aligns service conditions at the institute with existing government norms.
With the order now in effect, employees at NIMS gain access to a benefit that had remained unavailable for several years, marking a change in leave-related policy at the state-run healthcare institution.
