Engineering and infrastructure company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to invest ₹18,600 crore in the state through three major projects that are expected to generate more than 8,200 employment opportunities.
The agreement was signed at the State Secretariat on June 4 in the presence of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan, senior state ministers and government officials. According to officials, the agreement marks one of the major industrial investment commitments announced under the current administration.
The largest investment under the MoU is a ₹15,000 crore data centre project in Kancheepuram district. The facility is planned to support hyperscale computing, cloud infrastructure and edge AI services, addressing growing demand for digital infrastructure. The project is expected to create around 500 direct jobs.
L&T will also invest ₹2,500 crore to establish an electronics manufacturing facility in Coimbatore. The proposed unit will manufacture electronic systems and components while creating approximately 2,000 employment opportunities, further strengthening Tamil Nadu’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
The third investment involves a ₹1,100 crore expansion of L&T’s Kattupalli shipyard in Tiruvallur district. The project is aimed at enhancing shipbuilding, fabrication capabilities and offshore wind infrastructure, with an estimated 5,700 new jobs expected to be generated.
State officials said the investments are expected to support both direct and indirect employment while reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s position as a preferred destination for advanced manufacturing, digital infrastructure and engineering projects.
The proposed investments align with the state’s broader industrial development strategy and are expected to contribute to long-term economic growth, infrastructure expansion and skill-based employment opportunities across multiple sectors.
