OpenAI has reportedly bought back around $7 billion worth of shares from its employees, giving workers at the privately held AI company an opportunity to realise part of the value of their equity without waiting for a public listing.
The employee share sale values OpenAI at approximately $852 billion, in line with the valuation from its latest fundraising round in March. That funding round reportedly raised $122 billion, significantly strengthening the company’s financial position as it continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence.
The transaction gives OpenAI employees greater liquidity while the company remains privately held. Technology companies are increasingly using employee share buybacks and tender offers to allow workers to cash out part of their equity while postponing an initial public offering.
OpenAI has already taken steps towards a potential IPO, having reportedly confidentially filed paperwork with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in June. However, the latest tender offer could reduce the immediate pressure to go public by giving employees access to liquidity without requiring a stock-market listing.
The timing also comes as OpenAI continues to refine its business strategy. The company has been placing greater emphasis on its enterprise business while reassessing some of its other investments and initiatives.
A public listing would require OpenAI to demonstrate sustained financial growth and provide investors with a credible long-term outlook. The company has faced questions about its ability to meet some internal financial targets, even as demand for its AI products continues to grow.
The employee share buyback therefore provides OpenAI with additional flexibility. It allows the company to reward and retain employees by providing liquidity while remaining private, giving management more time to strengthen its business before deciding whether to pursue an IPO.
The move also comes amid intensifying competition in the AI industry. Rival Anthropic has attracted substantial investor interest and has reportedly been moving closer to profitability.
For OpenAI, maintaining its high valuation while giving employees a way to monetise their equity could become an important part of its workforce retention and financial strategy as the global AI race accelerates.
