AI startup Anthropic has confirmed plans to establish an in-house chip design team as it seeks to expand the computing infrastructure supporting its Claude family of AI models.
The company is recruiting engineers with expertise in hardware and software to help co-design AI chips and models that can improve performance and efficiency at scale. The initiative comes as demand for computing resources continues to grow across the artificial intelligence industry.
Anthropic said the effort is part of a broader multi-chip strategy. The company currently works with cloud and semiconductor providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, Nvidia and AMD, to access the computing hardware needed to train and deploy its AI models.
Previous reports indicated that Anthropic had explored potential partnerships, including discussions with Samsung, as part of its chip development plans. However, the company has not announced any new manufacturing partnerships or provided additional details.
Developing advanced AI chips typically requires significant investment, specialised engineering expertise and access to advanced semiconductor manufacturing. Anthropic has not disclosed a timeline for the project or said whether it intends to manufacture the chips directly or work with external fabrication partners.
The move reflects a broader trend in the AI industry, where companies are investing in custom chip development to expand computing capacity, optimise AI workloads and reduce reliance on third-party hardware suppliers as demand for AI services continues to increase.
