Restaurants and hotels in Bengaluru may increase menu prices in the coming months as businesses face mounting operational expenses driven by higher wages, rising fuel costs, and increased raw material prices.
Industry associations have indicated that food prices could be revised in phases as establishments assess the financial impact of a proposed increase in minimum wages by the Karnataka government. Hospitality operators say the move could significantly raise employee-related expenses across the sector.
According to industry representatives, popular menu items could become more expensive if costs continue to rise. A masala dosa currently priced at around ₹80 could see a substantial increase, while chicken biryani and other commonly ordered dishes may also become costlier.
Hospitality bodies note that the impact extends beyond wages alone. Employers are also required to cover statutory benefits such as provident fund contributions and employee insurance, along with expenses related to accommodation, meals, and uniforms for staff.
At the same time, restaurants are facing higher input costs. Prices of key ingredients, including rice and other food commodities, have increased in recent months, adding further pressure on operating margins. Rising fuel and transportation costs have also contributed to the overall expense burden.
Industry associations say discussions on pricing strategies are ongoing, but many operators believe some level of menu price revision may be necessary to offset growing costs.
The sector has also raised concerns about potential employment challenges if operating expenses continue to climb. Some industry representatives warn that prolonged cost pressures could lead businesses to review staffing requirements in an effort to manage expenses.
Hospitality organizations are continuing discussions with stakeholders as they evaluate the potential impact of wage revisions and broader economic conditions on the food service industry.
