To the employees of Amazon Web Services (AWS) who are concerned about the new return-to-office policy, CEO Matt Garman has presented an option to leave the company.
At a recent meeting, Garman stated that those who are unhappy with or hesitant to comply with the five-day in-office policy may choose to resign, according to reports from Reuters. He believes that in-person collaboration is essential for innovation and argues that employees need to be physically present in the office for the development of new products.
However, as seen globally with return-to-office mandates, many employees are unhappy with this decision. They are particularly worried about commuting time and the loss of flexibility that remote work offers.
Previously, Amazon employees were required to work in the office three days a week. About two months ago, Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon, mandated that employees work five days in the office. Following this decision, some employees who did not adhere to the three-day in-person requirement found themselves unable to access their systems and were instructed to resign voluntarily.
Some speculate that Amazon’s strict return-to-office policy may be a strategy to reduce its workforce. The company may anticipate that many disgruntled employees will choose to leave, thereby avoiding the need for formal terminations.
