Google has recently laid off 200 employees from its core team as part of a restructuring effort to reduce costs. Out of those employees, 50 were from the engineering team based in California. Some of the jobs that were cut are expected to be relocated overseas, mainly to India and Mexico. CNBC has reported that the company wishes to work more closely with its partners and developer communities, which is why it is considering relocation to high-growth workforce locations.
The majority of the impacted employees were involved in the development of Google’s best offerings, as well as its global information technology infrastructure and user safety. Asim Husain, who is the Vice President of Google Developer Ecosystem, informed the employees that they could apply for other positions within the organization. Google has offered severance packages and outplacement support to those who were laid off.
This is not the first time that Google has let go of employees due to restructuring. In April, the company had laid off employees from its Python, Flutter, and Dart teams as part of a global restructuring effort. The reason for the headcount reduction was to increase efficiency and eliminate bureaucracy. However, Google had made it clear at the time that the layoffs were not companywide.
Earlier, Google had made news when it fired some employees who participated in sit-in protests against the company’s controversial $1.2 billion contract with Israel.
