India has expanded its efforts to strengthen domestic telecom manufacturing with the launch of its first dedicated Telecom Manufacturing Zone, while the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for telecom and networking products has generated around 36,000 jobs, according to official data.
The PLI programme is aimed at encouraging local production of telecom equipment, attracting investment, and reducing dependence on imports. The initiative also supports India’s broader objective of becoming a major manufacturing and export hub for telecom technologies.
The newly launched Telecom Manufacturing Zone is expected to bring together telecom equipment manufacturers, component suppliers, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), startups, and research and development institutions within a single industrial ecosystem. Officials believe the integrated cluster will help accelerate innovation, strengthen domestic supply chains, and support the development of next-generation technologies, including 5G and future 6G infrastructure.
According to the Department of Telecommunications, the dedicated manufacturing zone is intended to improve collaboration across the telecom value chain while enhancing India’s competitiveness in global markets. The initiative is also expected to attract both domestic and international investment into the sector.
The development comes as India’s digital infrastructure continues to expand, with nationwide 5G deployment increasing demand for telecom equipment and networking products. Greater local manufacturing capacity is expected to support domestic requirements while creating new export opportunities.
Industry representatives view the manufacturing zone and the PLI scheme as complementary initiatives. While the incentive programme has encouraged companies to invest in telecom production, the new industrial cluster is designed to provide the infrastructure and ecosystem needed for long-term growth.
Government officials have also highlighted skill development as a priority to support the sector’s expanding workforce. The focus will be on equipping employees with the capabilities required by advanced manufacturing while enabling MSMEs and startups to participate more actively in larger supply chains.
The combined emphasis on financial incentives, manufacturing infrastructure, and workforce development reflects India’s strategy to strengthen its position in the global telecom manufacturing industry.
