Semiconductor Industry in India Aims to Create 8500 Jobs

India’s advancements in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing are set to create 8,500 high-tech jobs, marking a significant leap in the country’s industrial and technological growth. As the Union Budget for 2025-26 approaches, the Union Finance Ministry has highlighted this achievement, attributing it to key initiatives like the Semicon India Programme and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme.

Launched in December 2021, the Semicon India Programme leads efforts to establish the country as a global semiconductor hub. So far, five semiconductor projects and 16 design firms have been approved, projected to generate 25,000 direct jobs in advanced technology and an additional 60,000 indirect roles. Of these, 8,500 positions will directly arise from semiconductor packaging and design, showcasing the government’s commitment to developing a specialized, tech-savvy workforce.

Simultaneously, the PLI Scheme for electronics manufacturing is enhancing India’s technological capabilities. With production valued at ₹6.14 lakh crore and exports reaching ₹3.12 lakh crore, the initiative has already created 1.28 lakh direct jobs. Together, these schemes highlight a comprehensive strategy to reinforce India’s electronics ecosystem while boosting employment.

The programme also aims to attract investments worth ₹1.52 lakh crore, further solidifying India’s position in the global supply chain. These initiatives not only focus on job creation but also on cultivating a highly skilled workforce to meet the increasing demands of cutting-edge industries like semiconductors and electronics manufacturing.

As the Union Budget approaches, the emphasis is on expanding these initiatives to maintain momentum. The commitment to job creation and skill development reflects a forward-thinking approach to prepare India’s workforce for the challenges of a rapidly evolving global tech landscape. These efforts enhance India’s economic self-reliance and position it as a key player in the global technology sector.

The challenge ahead lies in scaling these achievements and sustaining the current trajectory, ensuring that India’s industrial ambitions translate into meaningful opportunities for its workforce.
